INTRODUCTION

TREKKING IN THE HIMALAYA
The Kingdom of Nepal is well known as one of the best destination in the world for enjoying the real beauty of nature through trekking. The trail into the interior parts of the country follows ancient foot – trails which meander through scenic river–banks, intricately terraced fields and the forested ridges connecting picturesque hamlets and mountain villages. Trekkers can walk along the rough but beautiful trails or virgin tracks in the lap of green and friendly looking hills. The rhododendron-filled, green, dark and deep forests with different seasonal flowers blossoming can catch anyone’s eye as can the scattered residential cottages, domestic and forest animals, variety of birds, both Hindus and Buddhist temples, mountains, breath-taking landscape, and above all warm greeting from smiling local people.
Trekking in Nepal is an all season activity. It is possible at any time of the year depending on where one wishes to go. However, the most popular season are spring (February – May) and autumn (September – November). Even during the monsoon season (June – August), you can trek in the rain-shadow areas north of the Himalaya like Mustang, Upper Manang and Dolpo.

THE EVEREST REGION:
The area around Khumbu is commonly called as the Everest Region. It is also known as the home of Sherpa people and the mysterious Yeti. This trek comprises not only the Everest Base Camp but also Namche Bazar, Lukla, Tyanboche and the whole Solukhumbu, which are at the lap of looming Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world and also the mount Ama Dablam. The trek to Khumbu area is not only famous for trekking and expedition but also for the Sherpa culture. One can enjoy and learn Sherpa culture very closely by visiting this region. The complete trek starts from Jiri to Lukla. Flying to Lukla is the best option for those with limited time. Most of the flights depend on weather condition. However, the helicopter service and chartered flights are available at request.

ANNAPURNA REGION:
Jomsom to Mustang Trek:
This trek starts from Pokhara and takes 150 km to reach Mustang. The new adventurous trek starts from Jomsom. The land is The land is also covered with other glittering snow peak like Nilgiri, Tukche and Muktinath, the famous shrine of Hindus. The trekking starts from Jomsom where there is an airstrip.
Mustang is 200 kilometers into the hinterland that constitutes mainly barren ridges, deep canyons, eroded cliffs and Moraine valleys. Its landscape is unrivaled for it has a stupendous wilderness, pristine scenery, snow capped peaks, spectacular 16 th century monasteries and many other unique attractions. The view of wind swept Kali-Gandaki valley, vast spaces around Kagbeni and vast ridges that straggle high mountains provide a mind –blowing. experience.
The diverse terrain and variety of cultures of the region north of Pokhara make each day’s walk a different experience and make the area the most popular destination in the country. Four favorite treks, each with minimum of about one week and maximum of three week treks, to Kali-Gandaki basin include Manang region, Annapurna range, Jomsom and the Annapurna Sanctuary. Alpine meadows, moraines, glaciers and breathtaking views of the Annapurna range abound. The three hundred kilometer Annapurna Circuit combines the first two areas by crossing high altitude pass, Manang Thorang –La (5360meters) and takes up to three weeks to complete.

THE LANGTANG – HELAMBHU:
Gosainkunda region is easily accessible from Kathmandu. Each area in itself is a good choice for those with limited time. It offers many features that range from culture to adventure. In a week to ten days, any one can visit one of these areas by crossing High Mountain passes. A three-week trip could cover all the three areas. The Himalayan views overall are not quite as spectacular as in the Annapurna or Khumbu region, but they remain unforgettably beautiful plus the trails are less crowded and the people are friendly and interesting. Dhaulagiri:
White Mountain, separated from the Annapurna region by Kali Gandaki gorge, the deepest gorge in the world , includes some fifteen peaks above 7000m.This region, considered to be one of the most remote places of the Kingdom of Nepal, has abundance of Himalayan peaks, hidden valleys, high passes and sweeping vistas. The Trans-Himalayan journey is quite, peaceful and full of adventure and excitement. Trekking in this area is relatively but trekkers willing to spend their holidays amid nature and natural surroundings full of peace and tranquility choose this “Off the beaten track” trekking destination.
Manasulu:
The main journey here is around Manaslu, reaching north of the Himalayas and great Manaslu-Himalchuli- Baudha massif. Since Manaslu is a special area for trekkers and was only officially opened from 1991 onwards for trekking, it needs special permits. Three-week complete treks will give you an exciting, adventurous and once in a lifetime experience.
Dolpo Trek:
The Dolpo region is the natural embodiment of high passes, rare flora and fauna, and sweeping vistas, which is enriched by the traditional Tibetan cultural heritage. This region, surrounded by Dhaulagiri and Tibet from south and north, respectively, is regarded as a blend of natural and cultural phenomena. It was opened in 1991 for trekking. This region lies on the north side of Himalayas, it is also a rain shadow area and the climatic situation of this place is same as Nepal is Dolpo trek that takes 34 days to complete. In this trek, the maximum elevation will be 4530 m. to 5115 m. and is one of the most arduous treks of the country.
Kanchanjunga Trek:
Literally the Kanchanjunga means crystal clear in Nepal while geographically the Kanchanjunga mountain is the second tallest in the world after the Mt. Everest of Nepal and the K2 of Pakistan. The whole trekking areas in this region stretches through and around Arun River whose origin dates back to prehistoric period. The Arun valley is one of the most beautiful regions to trek in Nepal. Traveling around this part also gives an opportunity to enjoy.
Gauri Shanker:
Gauri Shanker Trek is another beautiful trek in Nepal where one can enjoy the beautiful scenery of majestic Himalayas including Rolwaling, Gaurishanker, Tashi Laptse, Dorje Lakpa. The trekking route is full of alpine forests including trees with blooming rhododendron flowers, the national flower of Nepal, and beautiful native villages.

Boating:
Nepal provides excellent opportunities for boating from glacier –fed lakes up north down to where rivers ease into the Terai plains. With famous lakes like Phewa, Begnas and Rupa, Pokhera is one the most popular destination for boating.
In the Terai, one can go canoeing on Narayani or Rapti rivers near Chitawan National Park. Boats and canoes can also be rented from local dealers on hourly basis. Pokhera and Chitawan are accessible both by air and road from Kathmandu. A Wide variety of accommodation and other facilities are easily available in both the places.
Rock Climbing
It’s another challenging sport for outdoor lovers. Most of the areas for rock climbing are situated towards the north of Kathmandu Valley in the vicinity of the Nagarjun forest and the Shivapuri National Park. Trip to these places can be combined with hiking, bird watching, nature tours and other activities. Nagarjun, 3 kilometers from Kathmandu city can be reached via Balaju near the New Bus Park, Shivapuri can be reached via Budhanilkantha which is 9 kilometers away from Kathmandu.
Bungee Jump:
The ultimate thrill of a bungy jump can be experienced at one of the best sites in the world. Nepal’s bungy jumping site is situated 160 meters over the word river Bhote Koshi. The site is located close to the Nepal- Tibet border at Barabise and is a three – hour bus ride from Kathmandu. A package deal includes the jump, bus ride to the site and even meals. Nepalese are entitled to a 30 percent discount. Accommodation and other facilities are available in Barahbise.
Jungle Safari:
The tropical jungles of Nepal’s Terai preserve some of the best wildlife habitat in the subcontinent. Jungle safaris on elephant back or jeep rides are offered at Parsa Wildlife Reserve, Bardia National Park, Chitwan National Park and Shukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve, all located in Terai. The best time to visit the Terai is during winter months when weather is more temperate. A wild range of tourist facilities are available in and around the areas.
Mountain Biking:
Nepal’s diversity terrain is what mountain bikers’ dreams are made of. Biking offers an environmentally sound way of exploring the country. It is possible to go biking the entire length of Nepal. Centuries-old dirt roads and trails offer a chance to go on extended trips to exotic locales like Annapurna and Kanchanjunga areas. 21 to 27 gear bicycle are recommended when riding through tough terrain. Mountain bikes are available for rent for a day or longer in numerous bicycle rental outlets in and around Kathmandu and Pokhara through off routes that weave in and out of the cities. Food and accommodation are easily available around Valley and the main trail. However, it is recommended to use the services of licensed biking companies.
Hunting:
Licensed hunting is allowed in Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve in West Nepal. Dhorpatan is a prime habitat of blue sheep, ghoral, serow, Himalayan tahr, black bear, pheasant and partridge. Endangered species here are chir pheasant and red panda. Hunting is allowed only after acquiring license from the Department of National Parks and wildlife Conservation in Kathmandu and is restricted to a certain time in a year. Dhorpatan is four days treks from Baglung which is 72 km from Pokhara. The best time to visit Dhorpatan is during February through April and August through October. Accommodation is offered in tented camps by agencies or at one of the village houses.
Honey Hunting:
Honey hunting is an age-old tradition here in Nepal. Local honey hunters show their exceptional skills by hanging themselves from cliffs as high as 300 meters using bamboo ladders and hemp ropes, while harvesting the honeycombs. See the spectacular honey hunting on the steep bee cliffs to experience the tradition and culture of the local people. See them while you trek in the foothills of the Himalayas.
Rafting, kayaking and Cannoning:
Rafting is one of the most exciting ways of exploring the wilderness of Nepal. Option ranges from paddle rafting a team to Kayaking alone in the water. Yet another extremely popular water-sport option is cannoning to explore hidden landscapes. The best time for these activities is October through mid-December and March through early May. The government has opened 16 rivers graded on a scale of 1 to 5 for commercial rafting. Since safety is of utmost important choosing veteran rafting company is a wise move. It is also important to observe all the safety rules and precautions provided by the River Guide.
Mountain Flights:
Mountain flights offer passengers a spectacular view of the Himalayan peaks. The one-hour mountain flight takes within camera range of some of the highest peaks in the world. The peaks seen are Gosaithan, Dorje Lhakpa, Phurbi Chyachu, Choba Bhamare, Mt. Gaurishanker, Melungtse, Chugimago, Mt. Numbur, Karyolung, Cho-Oyu, Gyachungkang, Pumori, Nuptse and finally, Mt. Everest. Mountain flights offered by several airlines especially in the morning from domestic airport in Kathmandu.
Paragliding:
Paragliding in Nepal gives an opportunity for aerial view of the Himalayas. Pokhara, the beautiful lakeside town at the foot of the Annapurna Mountains offers paragliding services. Best season is from October through April. There are various deals for the paragliding veterans and novices. Three-day introduction course is offered to beginners while tandem flights where one can fly with instructor are offered.
Ultra Light Air Craft:
Ultra light aircrafts offer a breadth-taking bird’s-eye view of Pokhara Valley and the surrounding mountains. Best season is from October through April. Flights take place from sunrise to 11a.m and from 3p.m. to sunset every day during these months. In the half-hour flights, one can fly over Pokhara city, Phewa Lake, Sarangkot hill and get a close to the Mt. Fishtail. Another option is the exploration of the Annapurna range from 12,000 feet or higher in an hour. Pokhara is easily accessible from Kathmandu, Chitwan and other major towns.
